Punjab govt promises modern traffic control system | The Express Tribune

LAHORE:

Punjab government spokesperson Hasaan Khawar on Monday said the government will soon introduce a modernised traffic control system to facilitate tourists across the province.

Talking to the PTV news, he said that the Punjab government will develop a better system by identifying the flaws in the existing one that resulted in a tragedy that claimed 22 lives in Murree.

He also stressed that there was a dire need to modernise the ‘regulatory structure’ and bring reforms in traffic as well as the Rescue 1122 for better management of emergency situations.

Khawar said that the government will soon launch an awareness drive to educate people about the route and travel during the snowfall, and for a safe drive to tourist spots in winters through media platforms.

Replying to a question, he said that all roads are being cleared and travel advisory for citizens will soon be issued with the consultation of all departments.

The Punjab police on Sunday said over 500 families in the calamity-hit Murree were rescued and taken to safety. Separately, army rescuers cleared routes around the hill station, which was sheltering thousands of tourists.

Action against hoteliers

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar directed the Rawalpindi Division commissioner to initiate legal action against hoteliers for overcharging tourists.

CM Buzdar said those who hiked the prices of food items and room rents should face legal consequences.

He said the government will not tolerate overpricing as it was akin to plundering. The local administration should take measures to ensure vendors at tourist spots follow the price lists, added the minister.
