Work on the state-of-theart assembly hall named “Jinnah Hall” will be completed in the next six months for the elected representatives of Rawalpindi Metropolitan Corporation (RMC) Around 80 per cent of work has been completed on the assembly hall being constructed on the site of the former mayor’s house attached to the RMC office.

The rest of the work on the hall will be completed in the next six months followed by a formal inauguration. Work on the assembly building is under way at a cost of Rs75 million.

Under the new LG act, approved by the Punjab cabinet, after the expiry of the current RMC tenure on December 31, the mayor of RMC will be turned into the metropolitan corporation after the next LG elections and the mayor will have the status of the “lord mayor”.

The assembly all building will have mayor’s office, deputy mayor’s office, local government representatives’ offices, separate offices for women local government representatives, assembly hall, public gallery and mayor’s secretariat room.

The assembly hall will also have a state-of-the-art sound system, lighting system, LCDs, waiting area, public and press galleries.

According to sources, the assembly hall of the metropolitan corporation will be decorated with the complete history and pictures of mayors and deputy mayors.

The assembly hall will also have pictures and details of present and past national and provincial assembly members and federal and provincial ministers.

According to sources, in addition to the separate parking lot, the assembly hall building will have a stateof-the-art cafeteria, a dispensary and a separate court hall for the mayor to tend to public complaints.

The metropolitan corporation mayor will have more powers as compared to the past mayors and many government departments will be placed under the mayor’s control including PHA, WASA, RDA and many other government agencies.

According to sources, under the new local government system, elections were expected to be held on a party basis next year.
