Xiaomi gambled that people may be interested in smaller high end phones, but last week’s poll shows once again that larger devices are just more popular. The Xiaomi 12 Pro came out on top with a healthy lead over the alternative options.
Some questioned if it’s enough of an upgrade over the Mi 11 Pro, others are tempted by the idea of a “Xiaomi 12 Ultra” (we’ve seen signs that it does exist). Ultimately, the majority of people divided into two camps – those that like MIUI and those that don’t.
Xiaomi is known for offering a lot of bang for the buck hardware-wise and the 12 Pro is no exception. However, it’s the software that is divisive – perhaps the new MIUI 13 will change people’s minds. The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 has to prove itself too, as its predecessor (the 888) had a reputation for running hot. But that’s something we will test when we get our hands on a review unit.
Interestingly, we didn’t see many complaints about charging – the 12 Pro jumped up to 120W while cutting back the battery capacity to 4,600 mAh (from 67W, 5,000 mAh on the Mi 11 Pro). Usually, we see a lot more comments about how fast charging affects battery life. Has this concern faded away like the one about OLED displays suffering from burn in?
As for the vanilla Xiaomi 12, it did fairly well in the poll, but it might need a glowing review before people jump on it. That 6.28” display wasn’t as big a draw as Xiaomi might have hoped. In fact, some commenters complained that it is too small and they don’t want to pay the Pro premium just to get a bigger screen. But this is Xiaomi we’re talking about, give it a few months and there will be half a dozen new 12-series phones with various screens and chipsets.
Speaking of chipsets, the trusty Snapdragon 870 is featured in the Xiaomi 12X, which is basically the vanilla 12 model but with an older chipset. The 870 (a revamped 865) still has a good reputation and the option to save some cash while not losing much performance appealed to some. Sometimes slow and steady wins the race, but this model failed to cause much excitement among fans.
