Wheelchair no obstacle for teacher | The Express Tribune

HARIPUR:

Ghazi Primary School Head Teacher Mehreen Bibi epitomises courage and diligence towards her duties as she shows up to fulfill her teaching obligations in a wheelchair every day.

She has spent hundreds of rupees on the upgradation of the primary school building, while also donating new uniforms and warm clothes worth Rs0.2 million to the underprivileged students of the school.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Mehreen said she had started teaching in 1993 when she was physically fit. However, she has been confined to a wheelchair for the past decade due to severe backache. The educator said that although she faced several problems, her vocation was still her priority.

Mehreen recalled that she was transferred to the Ghazi Primary School seven years ago, when there were only two rooms, and the building was in a dilapidated condition.

She said that the new building had more classrooms and several washrooms as well, and that the uplift work of the building was privately financed by her through relatives in the US.

The teacher said she had spent more than Rs2 million on revamping the school to provide a good and clean environment to the young girls studying there. She has also recently distributed sweaters, hats, uniforms, socks and other warm items among students coming from unprivileged backgrounds.

Mehreen said it was her dream that no school in her village should lack any facilities. The teacher added that she also wanted to do something for public schools in the future, similar to what she had done during her 27-year-long career. She also thanked her relatives who had donated huge sums of money.

A local school teacher, Malik Muhammad Irshad, paid tribute to the services of the female head teacher, and said she has added to the beauty of the school building. He added that Mehreen never let her wheelchair get in the way of performing her job with punctuality and discipline.

Irshad shared that Mehreen Bibi had hired a female helper who wrote on the board for her and that she paid her every month from her own salary.

He added that the locals viewed the services of Mehreen Bibi and her love for education with great regard, saying that educators carrying out their duties with such dedication deserved their deep appreciation.
